
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) was an American singer and actress her career spans more than 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her smooth, sultry contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of pop and jazz standards between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was the recording of "Cry Me a River" that she first performed on her debut album. In addition to receiving a music-related recognition, London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her performance as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa, California to vaudevillian parents. She began her acting career in Los Angeles as an actress. London's 35 year acting career began with film in 1944. It included roles as the female lead role in a variety of westerns. In the mid-1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969, she released her last studio album. However, she continued to be prominent in the emergency series in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse.
